As everyone else is saying, try firefox. IE is awful.
Try the firefox browser.
Not only is it extremely popular and safe, it's safer than Windows explorer, you can have several windows open without moving away from your current window (called tabs) but just clicking on the tabs of your other windows at the top, and your current window will just change to that.
Also, you've got a tiny quick search bar on your right, so when you're lazy to go into the search pages just type directly into those.
Firefox can have many 'plug-in's including macromedia flash, quicktime (for online music playing), etc, etc.
Check out their website. It was also voted best by PC magazine and has high user ratings.
Also, it loads pages faster than explorer.

What kinds of files are you trying to play? Is is absolutely necessary to play them in a browser? What is the error being displayed? Is it possible to download these files and play them in a normal media player?
Other good browsers available are Firefox and Opera, you can download and use them for free. You may be missing plugins for IE which may be necessary for playing the files that you want to.
