Why is Internet Explorer shutting down when I type in a web address?

If I type in a website into the address bar, an error box pops up (Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.), and then it will shut down just that browser window. If I have multiple browsers open, it will not affect them. This only happens when I type in the address. If I click on a link, or select a page saved in my favorites list, it will work just fine. Why is this happening, and how do I correct it?

After a Windows Update about a month ago, there was a problem where entering something into the address bar would do nothing, but not crash the browser... I'm not sure if your issue is related to this bug, but you might want to visit http://www.windowsupdate.com/ and see if there's anything your computer is lacking in the update department that will fix the problem.

It could also be spyware. The fact that you're entering in information when the crash occurs points to this more than some other situations---It's almost as if a piece of spyware was removed, but not fully, and something that a lingering piece of spyware is looking for is no longer there, causing the crash. Run several spyware programs. I like the trio of Pest Patrol (you can get from the Yahoo toolbar), Ad-Aware, and Spybot S%26amp;D (both available from http://www.download.com/) for a good amount of coverage.

It also could be a security program. Try disabling Firewalls, pop-up blockers, and in-broswer toolbars and see if the issue goes away. You can disable most security programs by seeking them out in the system tray (area in the lower right next to the clock), right clicking and choosing disable/quit/exit, etc. Toolbars can be disabled by going to view%26gt;toolbars and removing the check by clicking on each one.

In the old days, you could run a browser repair. Not possible any more for some reason. Even an uninstall and reinstall is difficult to do. Switching to Firefox or other browser is a great idea, but if you'd prefer not to, I hope one of these suggestions work. Rolling back to a previous date could work, but you can lose data.

Good luck!

great browswer and a good alternative. Also with internet explorer, AFTER you have another browser working, DELETE explorer. and redownload that too.
Get the latest updates from Microsoft, also go to top of web page tools internet options delete files delete cookies clear history, content clear ssl state autocomplete clear forms. Then go to your C Drive Windows Prefetch, delete all thats there but not layout.

Then switch the power of to your modem and leave for 5 Min's, switch back on and leave for another 5 Min's.

D/load ccleaner eusing free and easy to use.

Hope that helps.

Good Luck.
